From birth, parents instinctively use music to soothe children, express love, and encourage fun and curiosity. A 2016 study at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found that musical experiences in childhood can actually stimulate brain development, especially in areas such as language and reading.
Our friends at HOMER are very familiar with the benefits of music which they explain in ‘ 4 Reasons To Listen To Music With Your Kids’ – and they encourage us as parents to find opportunities to expose children to music.
If you know Luna the moon, you definitely know that music is a big part of her life, here’s how Luna incorporates these learning into every episode!
1. Movement and Coordination
Along with music, DANCING is one of Luna’s biggest weaknesses! Dancing helps children develop and enhance their balance and coordination skills, so next time Luna busts a move, we encourage you to join in!
2. Vocabulary and Language Development
Luna loves to sing! Why not have a sing-a-long with Luna, Andy, Carmen and Leo? According to HOMER, music introduces children to new vocabulary and teaches them the meaning of words. Even songs without lyrics (instrumental) can help a child further develop their listening skills.
3. Mindfulness
In Let’s Go Luna!, every scene is accompanied by background music that is used to convey an emotion. HOMER explains that children can be taught to use music as an outlet to express and navigate their own emotions.
4. Introduces Children to Other Cultures
It looks like Andy is having a BLAST with these instruments! Did you know that listening to a variety of instruments and music genres can familiarize children with the sounds and stories of different cultures around the world? Take the bongos, for example, they can be a ticket to African and Cuban culture!
Now that we know the importance of music in a child’s development, we say, grab those records or tune into the next episode of Let’s Go Luna! and get on grooving!
