Rugby – Australia
Originating in the 1800’s, rugby is a physically demanding contact team sport. Similar to American football, rugby is played by carrying or kicking a ball across the playing field to the opponents’ goal line. There are two 40-minute halves with no time-outs. Players can be substituted off the field but cannot come back later in the game (with the exception of an injury).
Cricket – England
Known as England’s summer sport, cricket is a team game with 11 players. Similar to baseball, cricket is played with a ball and bat. The field (or pitch) is oval in shape with a rectangular space in the middle. Teams take turns batting or bowling (pitching) with the overall goal of being the team with the most runs!
Charreada – Mexico
Charreada is a rope and riding sport popularized in Mexico. Similar to American rodeo, the sport involves different events with horses and cattle. Both men and women compete in this game, sporting colourful outfits and sombreros!
Football – Egypt
Football (better known as soccer in North America) is a team sport where a ball is passed along the field by foot, and kicked into the opponents’ net. As one of the most popular and recognizable sports in the world, football is played at the Olympics, and in various leagues including the FIFA World Cup.
Table Tennis – China
Table Tennis, popularly known as ping pong, is a sport that involves two to four players who hit a tiny ball back-and-forth across a divided table with a net. Similar to tennis, the object of the game is to hit the ball over the net so that your opponent cannot return the hit. Table tennis is played at the Olympics as an indoor sport, but can be played outside as well!
