The nominations for the 2025 WGC Screenwriting Awards were announced by the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) on Tuesday, January 28, in Toronto, Canada. These nominations recognize the best in Canadian screenwriting, and we’re excited to share that six of our talented writers have received nods for their work across three of our incredible series! The WGC Screenwriting Awards highlight outstanding achievements in writing across various categories, and this year, our writers have made a huge impact in both the Children’s and Preschool categories.
Children’s Category Nominees

Produced by 9 Story Media Group and Brown Bag Films with Sony Pictures Animation, Open Season: Call of Nature is created for kids 6-11, and follows best friends Boog, a lovable, risk-averse grizzly bear, and Elliot, a fast-talking, ‘act-first, think-later’ deer. When the pair discover an abandoned summer camp in the middle of nowhere, they embark on a brave and hilarious adventure to create a new place to live where animals get to embrace their inner wild!
Let’s Go, Bananas! is created by Tim Bain (writer on Bluey, PJ Masks, and creator of Nick Jr’s Kangaroo Beach), based on his own joyfully bonkers family life. The show features a community of three sweet, silly animal families; gorilla girl Apple and her two Dads (the Bananas), crocodile twins Josh and Jamie and their single mother (the Crockers), and sisters Stellar and Piper and their tiger Mom and gazelle Dad (the Tiger-Zelles). Let’s Go, Bananas! is developed and produced by 9 Story Media Group, animated by Brown Bag Films (Toronto), and directed by Brown Bag Films’ own Matt Mitchell (Let’s Go Luna, Rosie’s Rules).
In Dylan’s Playtime Adventures, Dylan is eager to play pretend in every career! Whether it’s a doctor, a pizza chef, a sea caption or a hair stylist, there’s no adventure too big or too small. Armed with nothing but a few props and three fantastic friends, Dylan shows kids the best of play and improv, as he ‘yes ands’ his way through madcap adventures, empowering kids to trust their hearts, imaginations and each other. Dylan’s Playtime Adventures is produced by 9 Story Media Group and animated by award-winning studio Brown Bag Films in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery and CBC. It premiered in Canada on CBC and CBC Gem in Spring 2024, in the UK on CBeebies last fall, and in the US on Max this March.
The winners of this year’s WGC Screenwriting Awards will be announced at the upcoming awards ceremony, which will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at Koerner Hall in Toronto. It’s set to be an unforgettable night celebrating the best in Canadian screenwriting.
