Texture & Surfacing Artist

The Texture & Surfacing Artist is responsible for UV, texture, and developing shading to be used in Production.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to create a strong visual balance, aligned to the show outline and expectations;
  • Maintain project standards for naming and organizing textures, shading, and shading networks;
  • Stay up-to-date on new tools and improvements needed for textures and surfacing;

Role Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Texture & Surfacing Artist;
  • Portfolio that demonstrates well thought out UVs with strong visual appeal;

  • Superior knowledge of 3D texturing tools (Maya and Zbrush) as well as Photoshop and rendering software;

CG Rigger

The CG Rigger is responsible for rigging the props and characters that support the show.

 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Design the control mechanisms that are intuitive for animation;
  • Work collaboratively with team members and department leads;
  • Stay up-to-date on new tools and improvements needed for rigging in animation;
  • Deliver on tasks in alignment with tight timelines and scheduling requirements.

 

Role Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience as a CG rigger;
  • In depth understanding of animation principles, with superior prop and character modeling skills;
  • Proficient in Maya rigging, with knowledge of Maya shading networks and UV placement;
  • Automation knowledge in MEL or Python is considered an asset;
  • Superior communication skills, able to work autonomously and in a team setting.

CG Modeler

The CG Modeler is responsible for asset modeling, ensuring they fit with a show’s prescribed aesthetics.

 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify potential challenges and provide solutions in 2D design work;
  • Partner with rigging team on any required modeling changes;
  • Stay up-to-date on new technology, tools and improvements in modeling techniques;
  • Deliver on tasks in alignment with tight timelines and scheduling requirements.

 

Role Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience as a CG modeler;
  • Extensive modeling knowledge with Maya and 3DS Max;
  • Ability to interpret and develop 2D designs into CG;

CG Character Modeler

The CG Character Modeler envisions and models appealing characters that fit a show’s prescribed aesthetic.

 

Role Responsibilities:

Background Artist

The 9 Story background artist is involved in the animation process, helping to establish the colour, style and mood of a scene as described by the writer and director. The artist paints layouts and any other background-related art that the production may require, and ensures that the style and quality of the show are met. 

 

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborate with Supervisor in regards to paint assignments and timelines;
  • Review BG Keys to ensure continuity of brush style and colour palette;
  • Address any changes or revisions and  manage resubmissions for approval; 
  • Ensure style of show is mirrored and achieved at a high quality level;
  • Delivery of backgrounds in alignment with project timelines as noted by Supervisor.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience in animation background paint;
  • Superior understanding of Flash and Photoshop;
  • Extensive knowledge of lighting and color theory;
  • A keen eye for detail and composition;
  • Superior agility navigating and managing multiple priorities;
  • Professional and friendly with a flexible attitude;

Production Manager

REPORTS TO: Producer

CONTRACT TYPE: Full-Time


ROLE OVERVIEW:


The Production Manager works closely with the Producer and production team to provide support as needed, ensuring coordination of the daily workflow of production materials at each stage of the production. Acts as a liaison between Producer, Director and crew, and works with the Creative Director to communicate creative priorities throughout the productions as required.


ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure coordination of the daily workflow of production materials (ex. Scripts, storyboards, animatics, designs etc.);
  • Facilitate interdepartmental communication with all crew and freelancers;
  • Ensure all departments have the appropriate production assets and infrastructure in order to successfully execute in their roles and according to schedule;
  • Log and track all production activities and distributed materials, ensuring prompt distribution of production correspondence to internal and external clients/personnel (e-mail, courier, fax, etc.);
  • Review clearance and standard & practice reports to determine any required changes;
  • Maintain distribution and contact lists, credit beds etc.;
  • Attend creative review and approval sessions to help determine their impact on production;
  • Work closely with the Producer to propose solutions to any production challenges;
  • Support script coordination and preparation of record draft scripts, final production draft scripts, fine cut scripts;
  • Attend recording sessions and provide support in casting, record preparation and attendance;
  • Support design coordination, list, reviews, approvals and assignments;
  • Provide assistance with revisions/animation coordinating.

INDIVIDUAL SKILLS:

  • 4+ years of experience in same or similar role;
  • Strong understanding of the 2D animation pipeline;
  • Able to proactively recognize challenges, flag them to the Producer and provide possible solutions;
  • Strong understanding of the production ecosystem and deadlines;
  • Level-headed when working against tight timelines;
  • Support team to achieve their goals, leveraging coaching and performance best practices;
  • Able to identify areas of improvement within the pipeline, working with the Technical Director to find appropriate solutions;
  • Sound judgment and discretion while managing sensitive, confidential information.

Senior Harmony Designer

 

Reporting to the Design Supervisor, the Designer will work with the design and rigging team to meet deadlines.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Designer Supervisor in regards to design assignments.
  • Review animatic’s to ensure continuity of character and prop designs.
  • Follows the designs created by the Fun Pack Artist and recreates them in the appropriate software, when no design is available the designer will create it within the style and model of the show
  • Creates assets in the show style and on model,
  • Creates mouth charts, blinks, hands, feet, body parts and other assets in the show style and model
  • Design additional rotations or poses for character and prop designs
  • Work with VFX artist to design additional elements needed in the effect
  • Insert basic Breaks/Rigs into designs, and test to ensure that it can move as needed
  • Address all client and internal notes via the trackers, makes required changes or revisions and re-submits for approval.  
  • Communicates with Design Supervisor regarding status of work and any problems that may arise.
  • Complete work on schedule and maintain deadlines assigned

 

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of experience Designing and Rigging in Harmony (experience with version 12 is ideal)
  • The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of Animation, Effect, Colour and other aspects of the production pipeline.
  • Able to draw on model and style, maintaining consistent proportions and volumes
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent Communication Skills both written and verbal

Senior Pipeline Technical Director 2D

Reporting to: Head of Pipeline R&D

 

9 Story Media Group is looking for a Pipeline Technical Director to collaborate in the delivery of production-ready tools for its TV production pipeline. The Pipeline Technical Director provides direct and daily technical support to current TV Productions. Pipeline Technical Directors work with the Software Developers and Supervisors to architect & develop production tools as well as supporting modules in a Python scripting environment. Responsibilities include but not limited to solving technical issues, automating Shotgun, rendering, as well as supporting the asset and shot production pipelines. Working with a centrally-managed Pipeline development team, you will work closely with the Head of Pipeline R&D to support and develop the pipeline and tools.

 

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring current production practices to have a total understanding of the studio needs,  enabling all teams to meet their deadlines
  • Develop efficient and readable code with Object Oriented programming best practices
  • Author and maintain in-house documentation
  • Participate in 'post mortems' with production teams
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of trends and software used in television productions
  • Lead development and implementation of production pipelines for all studio productions
  • Recommend solutions to ensure technical decisions are made in an efficient and timely manner to increase efficiency
  • Maintain the ongoing monitoring of current productions to ensure Pipeline stability
  • Design and maintain Pipeline technical project milestones
  • Investigating new software for production
  • Advising  Artists and Technical Directors on technical production planning
  • Identifying inefficiencies in the production Pipeline and propose and design solutions
  • Responding  to Shotgun Helpdesk requests and provide 2nd level support to other team members
  • Consulting  with Development and Technology departments in designing bespoke production pipelines
  • Mentoring and work closely with other technical directors

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience in Pipeline development with distributed teams
  • Extensive development experience in Python, JavaScript, and QT Script
  • Experience using PyQT or PySide
  • Experience with Toon Boom Harmony

Overseas CG Animation Supervisor, Singapore

The Overseas CG Animation Supervisor collaborates with the Director/ Supervisors to explore and develop visual storytelling for a preschool action adventure show, and provides acting and timing direction to animators in the form of notes, mark-ups, or videos to deliver on superior quality animated feature productions.

 

 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Realize character action, pace, mood and cinematography in visual form based on the director’s description and launch of sequences and shots;
  • Proactively provide support to the animation team (inclusive of other animation leads),  inclusive of troubleshooting and leading the appropriate resolution to any aesthetic or technical issues as they arise;
  • Develop and implement ideas to capture both the activity and the emotional intent of the scene;
  • Lead the visual direction of animated sequences via contributing to sequence production while overseeing a team of animators;
  • Manage and assist with the recruitment of animation talent to ensure the highest quality of artists at the overseas studio;
  • Revise, edit and modify animation/shots as indicated by the director or creative team;
  • Work in adherence to dedicated budget and schedule while maintaining continuity within the story, cinematography, aesthetics, acting and mood;
  • Uphold a positive attitude that fosters professional collaboration within the animation department, as well as across the studio;
  • Work in collaboration with Technical Directors, Production Supervisors, CG Supervisors, and Production Team to maintain and further the production pipeline.

 

Role Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as an Animation Supervisor;
  • Proven leadership skills within an Animation Department on animated feature quality productions;
  • Willing and legally able to travel overseas for up to 8 months out of the year;
  • Superior working knowledge of Maya;
  • Strong knowledge of 3D animation principles, for both cameras and CG characters;
  • Understanding of light comedic principles, subtle acting and action flying sequences;
  • Strong drawing skills are considered an asset;
  • Strong communication skills, able to work autonomously and in a team setting;
